Takahashi, Akira, Eiko Kishi, Hirohisa Ishimaru, Yasushi Ikarashi, and Yuji Maruyama. Stimulation of rat hypothalamus by microdialysis with K1: increase of ACh release elevates plasma glucose. Am. J. Physiol. 275 (Regulatory Integrative Comp. Physiol. 44): R1647–R1653, 1998.— The effects of stimulation of the ventromedial hypothalamus (VMH) or lateral hypothalamus (LH) with potassium chloride through a microdialysis probe were studied. The concentrations of ACh and norepinephrine (NE) in the dialysate obtained from the hypothalamic nuclei and plasma glucose concentration were measured. Stimulation of the hypothalamic nuclei, VMH and LH, with potassium increased the plasma glucose level as well as the extracellular concentrations of ACh and choline. Addition of atropine, a muscarinic ACh receptor antagonist, into the potassium solution reduced the increase in the level of plasma glucose. Cholinergic stimulation of these nuclei with neostigmine increased the extracellular concentrations of ACh and plasma glucose. Stimulation of the nuclei with potassium also increased the release of NE. However, stimulation of the VMH or LH with NE and/or pargyline, a monoamine oxidase inhibitor, through the dialysis probe membrane did not significantly increase the plasma glucose concentration. These results suggest that activation of the muscarinic cholinergic or ACh-receptive neurons in the hypothalamic nuclei, VMH and LH, contribute to the elevation of plasma glucose level.

متن کاملMicrodialysis delivery of morphine to the hypoglossal nucleus of Wistar rat increases hypoglossal acetylcholine release.
STUDY OBJECTIVES The medullary hypoglossal nucleus (XII) innervates the genioglossal muscles of the tongue, and opioid-induced alterations in tongue muscle tone contribute to airway obstruction. Previous studies have shown that morphine causes a significant decrease in acetylcholine (ACh) release in some brain regions, but the effects of morphine on ACh release in XII have not been quantified. ...
متن کاملModulation of hippocampal acetylcholine release and spontaneous alternation scores by intrahippocampal glucose injections.
Recent evidence indicates that systemic glucose treatment enhances memory while producing a corresponding increase in hippocampal acetylcholine (ACh) output. The present experiments examined whether unilateral intrahippocampal infusions of glucose would enhance spontaneous alternation performance and whether there would be a corresponding increase in ACh output in the ipsilateral and contralate...
متن کاملAversive hypothalamic stimulation releases acetylcholine in the nucleus accumbens, and stimulation-escape decreases it.
Hypothalamic electrodes can generate positive reinforcement, as shown by self-stimulation, and negative reinforcement shown by stimulation-escape. It was hypothesized that acetylcholine (ACh) is released in the nucleus accumbens during the aversive state that underlies stimulation-escape. If this is correct, escape behavior should lower extracellular ACh. Rats were prepared with microdialysis p...
متن کاملRate of fall in blood glucose and recurrent hypoglycemia affect glucose dynamics and noradrenergic activation in the ventromedial hypothalamus.
Noradrenergic activity in the ventromedial hypothalamus (VMH) is increased and activates a sympathoadrenal response during hypoglycemia. How the rate at which hypoglycemia develops affects local glucose concentrations and norepinephrine (NE) release was evaluated by placing microdialysis probes into the VMH of male Sprague-Dawley rats receiving insulin (20 mU·kg(-1)·min(-1)) and variable glucos...
